The aim of the cooperation between KGHM Polska Miedź and SN Nuclearelectrica under the memorandum is to exchange experience and know-how. It is scheduled to last 36 months and is expected to cover the technical, economic, legal, financial, and organisational scope necessary for the development of small modular reactors. The projects are to be developed by Romania and Poland.

For KGHM, nuclear power means energy independence and lower costs. Investment in SMRs is a priority. It will enable us to maintain a competitive business advantage on a global scale. The introduction of innovative nuclear power technology based on small modules is a breakthrough in the Polish economy. Cooperation with an experienced partner from Romania is a vital support for the project, said Marcin Chludziński, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź.

International interest in the development of small modular reactors is directly proportional to the commitment of countries to ensure energy security and achieve decarbonisation goals, said Cosmin Ghita, CEO, SN Nuclearelectrica. The innovative features of this technology, modularity, and flexibility, are important here as they have a direct impact on lower costs and shorter project development time. Romania, with more than 25 years of experience in the safe operation of its own nuclear power plant, is the first European country to initiate the development of the NuScale SMR project, the only SMR technology certified at the international level. We are happy to cooperate and share our experiences and lessons and support KGHM in its first steps in implementing a safe, clean, and innovative technology, added Cosmin Ghita.

The memorandum signed by the two parties includes a comprehensive approach to all SMR project development activities, from site selection to power plant shutdown, to develop robust, safe, and cost-effective SMR projects in Romania and Poland.

As the first two countries to combine the pursuit of energy independence with one of the most advanced nuclear power technologies, the innovative NuScale small modular reactor technology, Romania and Poland will strengthen their energy security with a secure, stable, and affordable source of clean energy, and achieve their decarbonisation goals.

The project developed by Romania in partnership with NuScale will consist of six modules, each with an installed capacity of 77 MWe, i.e. a total of 462 MWe, will provide 193 permanent jobs at the plant, 1,500 construction jobs, 2,300 production jobs, and will enable Romania to prevent the release of 4 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.

KGHM, together with NuScale, intends to deploy SMR technology in Poland this decade. The first power plant will provide clean energy to the copper company’s production facilities. In this regard, KGHM has submitted an application to the State Atomic Energy Agency to evaluate the technology and prepare a location study. To this end, work is underway to establish an SMR Control Room Simulator (Education Centre – E2 Centre) in Poland for the training of nuclear operators and specialists.
