From industry straight to radiators

Heat generated from production can be used for heating houses.

Efficient use of waste heat is the main goal of the two largest projects carried out within Veolia, an international group operating in the water and sewage, energy and waste management sectors. Thanks to this initiative, houses located near the Volkswagen Poznan Foundry and the whole Silesian Town are heated in an ecological way.

The use of heat generated during the production process is an important element in the creation of a closed-loop economy. In Veolia’s opinion, its creation is the only possible direction of sustainable development in the world. Therefore, the company creates and implements solutions aimed at improving access to resources, while at the same time ensuring their protection and renewal.

The foundry in Poznan

An example of sensible use of resources can be the cooperation of the Volkswagen Poznan foundry, the largest cylinder head foundry in Europe, with Veolia Energia Poznan. As part of the project, an installation has been launched to recover heat from technological processes, which instead of reaching the atmosphere are transferred to 30 buildings located nearby.

This is one of the first cases of heat recovery from industrial processes for municipal heating purposes in Central and Eastern Europe.

The innovative concept of this project allows the heat emitted by the compressors at the plant to be fed directly into the municipal network through the Veolia node.

The whole process was carried out by replacing compressors with units equipped with heat recovery modules, building a heat recovery installation and connecting it with the heating system.

As a result, 32,000 GJ/year of waste heat can be utilised. 1,100 Mg/year less of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere. In addition, the consumption of water used for cooling has been reduced by 17 million litres per year.

Lower heat charges

Another noteworthy example of the creation of a closed-loop economy is the production and distribution of heat in the Miasteczko Śląskie, based on joint activities undertaken by Veolia, the zinc smelter and the municipality.

Heat is now produced by burning waste gas from the zinc production process in the smelter. The heat is then distributed through pumping systems to buildings, using a low-parameter heat network. The municipal heating network is managed by Veolia, which is responsible for the distribution of heat throughout the city.

As a result, the inefficient pumping station in the municipality has been eliminated and pumping systems in buildings have been built. The network in the city is being developed through connecting new customers. Necessary mordernisation work is underway aimed at the most efficient use of waste heat .A „sideeffect” of this solution is the reduction of heating charges by 9%.
